Phillies’ Dave Dombrowski reveals thought process behind trade deadline strategy

The Philadelphia Phillies allowed the market to reshape their offensive plans before the August 3 MLB trade deadline. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has now explained how the club’s strategy evolved before the cutoff.

Philadelphia’s primary offensive addition became Luis Arraez. The Phillies acquired the three-time batting champion and Caleb Kilian from the San Francisco Giants for pitching prospects Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair.

The trade also required a defensive overhaul. Arraez moved to second base, Bryson Stott shifted to third, Alec Bohm moved to first, and Bryce Harper returned to right field for the first time since 2022.

“Going into the All-Star break, and then coming out of it, and going into the trading deadline, our real thought process was we’d like to come up with a right-hand-hitting bat if we could”

Philadelphia ideally wanted an outfielder who could provide right-handed production in the middle of its lineup. However, the available options never presented enough of an upgrade for the front office to complete a deal.

The eventual pivot addressed another concern. The Phillies entered deadline day with a .304 on-base percentage, tied for 28th in MLB. Arraez was batting .324 with an .800 OPS and only 21 strikeouts across 464 plate appearances.

Harper’s willingness to change positions expanded the club’s options. His return to right field allowed the Phillies to consider infielders instead of limiting their search to outfielders.

Dombrowski also strengthened the bullpen by acquiring Brooks Raley from the New York Mets for John Spikerman and Luke Gabrysh. The veteran left-hander had recorded a 1.96 ERA across 45 appearances.

Ultimately, Philadelphia remained flexible instead of forcing a deal for a specific player profile. The Phillies wanted right-handed power but acquired the hitter they believed offered the clearest overall offensive improvement available.
