Adam Schefter isn’t sounding the alarm on Alec Pierce’s training camp absence just yet

Indiana Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce is still out of commission due to his ankle injury. While their training camp has been going well, Pierce remains on the PUP list. The ankle injury had bothered him since 2024. He played through it last season before finally deciding to undergo surgery in the offseason.

Despite being sidelined, the Colts gave him a four-year, $114 million contract extension in March, making him the highest-paid wide receiver in league history at that time before being surpassed by other players.

Indianapolis still has no timeline for the return of the 26-year-old Pierce, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter stressed that there is no need to sound the alarm just yet.

“They (Colts) continue to say that they believe he will be back by the start of the season. But he still has not practiced yet. Apparently, he got another shot in that ankle to help it along, and again, he’s not out there,” said Schefter on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“But it’s hard for me to imagine that they’re going to invest over $100 million, give him the huge money that they did, have him lead off your free agent show, where you break the news of Alec Pierce re-signing with the Colts on a four-year, $114 million deal, and all of a sudden, he’s not gonna be ready? I think he will be. They’re being smart and cautious. They’re taking their time with him. He’s just not there yet.”

There have been reports that Pierce could return in two weeks. The Colts have stressed that his rehabilitation has been moving in the right direction.

In 15 games last season, he tallied career-highs of 47 receptions and 1,003 receiving yards on top of six touchdowns. He was a huge part of the Colts’ hot start before they sputtered in the end, causing them to miss the playoffs for the fifth straight year.

In a report from the Indianapolis Star’s Nathan Brown, coach Shane Steichen said Pierce, the No. 53 pick in 2022, is “doing a hell of a job” in his road to recovery.
