Deebo Samuel reveals ‘quiet’ timeline of 49ers reunion

The San Francisco 49ers recently reunited with veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel. He returned to San Francisco following a brief stint with the Washington Commanders. There are some new faces, but a lot of familiar faces remain, including on the coaching staff.

Samuel is coming off a fine season with the Commanders. Washington struggled last year despite heightened expectations. It was clear he would not return to the nation’s capital following the 2025 campaign. In a recent interview, the 49ers pass catcher revealed that this has been in the works behind the scenes for some time.

“Not too many people know, but this has been a thing for a while. Communication with John (Lynch), communication with Kyle (Shanahan)… Throughout the offseason, you hear (49ers players) say, ‘It’d be good to have this person back.’ It’s always been those conversations of, ‘What if?'” Samuel said on NFL Network. “Little did they know, I wasn’t giving them too much information. Just doing my part, staying quiet, and letting John and Kyle do their jobs.”

Samuel was targeted 99 times by the Commanders last season. He caught 72 of those passes for 721 yards and five touchdowns. Washington struggled with injuries, eventually finishing 5-12 on the year.

The veteran pass catcher returns to San Francisco, hoping to continue the success the franchise enjoyed during his first time with the team. The 49ers made two Super Bowl appearances with Samuel, losing both times in 2019 and 2023.

Samuel and his teammates are hoping for better fortunes in 2026. Whether they can reach the heights they desire remains to be seen. The 49ers begin their 2026 campaign on September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams.
