Chargers’ Mike McDaniel pleased with Joe Alt, ongoing starting LG competition

There is a lot to enjoy this Training Camp season if you are a Los Angeles Chargers fan. With former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel coaching up the offense, quarterback Justin Herbert has the best offense and coaching staff he has ever had, ready to finally get over the hump.

So far, McDaniel has been a sight for sore eyes for a fanbase that is begging for Herbert and the Bolts to make a serious postseason run.

If that is going to happen, the offensive line must be healthy. Right now, that is a major focus. For the guys that are healthy in camp, they are making waves at practice, and McDaniel is happy to see it. ESPN’s Kris Rhim shared two updates on the starting left guard battle, as well as one on Joe Alt.

“There’s a lot of guys neck and neck right now,” McDaniel added: “I really want the starter to earn it. I think the player will tell us, I think his teammates will tell us.”

Added: “No one’s eliminated themselves from the tournament.”

The players in contention for that job are rookie Jake Slaughter, Trevor Penning, Kayode Awosika, and Branson Taylor.

As for Alt, the right tackle made a massive block on Khalil Mack to help produce on a screen play, something the linemen have struggled with so far this camp.

“Mike McDaniel ran across the field yelling, ‘Great job, Joe Alt’ during practice today after Alt blocked Khalil Mack on a screen, something the Chargers have struggled to do throughout camp.”

McDaniel said Alt has “exceeded my expectations that were pretty high coming in” and called him an “over-the-top pleasant surprise.”

This is exactly what you wanted to hear during camp. Rashawn Slater has taken some days off due to his progression back from his season-ending injury last year. From the looks of it, it is just a precaution. Everyone expects Slater to be healthy by the start of the campaign.
