Adam Schefter dumps cold water on potential Laremy Tunsil’s Commanders return in 2026
Star left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn left triceps muscle during a practice at the Washington Commanders’ training camp this offseason. While the 32-year-old will undergo surgery to repair the tear, the franchise has not shared a timetable for his return quite yet. On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared his two cents on the situation, and it doesn’t sound good.
During a guest appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Schefter stated that he would be shocked to see Tunsil return from the injury at all in the 2026-27 campaign. The popular NFL insider does not like Tunsil’s chances, considering how long the recovery process can take for a torn triceps muscle.
“Laremy Tunsil, for starters, I will be surprised if Laremy Tunsil plays this year,” Schefter said. “It’s a serious injury, and it’s gonna take a long period of time for him to come back from that… [The Commanders] certainly can’t count on him for the regular season. It’s a big blow.”

It sounds like the only chance of a return for the five-time Pro Bowler is to return would be if the Commanders reach the playoffs. Even then, Tunsil’s return from the injury is no guarantee. It’s said that Brandon Coleman will replace Laremy Tunsil as the starting left tackle.Foster Sarrell will serve as the backup option, while Trent Scott and Nicholad Petit-Frere could also get in the mix for the backup role during training camp.
The Washington front office signed Tunsil to a two-year, $60.2 million contract extension this offseason. It was a deal that made the former first-round pick the first offensive lineman in NFL history to average over $30 million annually.
