Mets’ Andy Green gives long-term evaluation of Devin Williams’ shoulder injury

While fans have been hoping to see a comeback from the New York Mets amidst a disappointing season, the team’s announcement of a key pitcher going to the injured list (IL) is another aspect of the lost year. As Mets star Devin Williams heads to the IL with a shoulder strain, interim manager Andy Green would give insight into the severity of the injury.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Green said that Williams had been dealing with “shoulder fatigue” for some time, and while he wanted to pitch through it, the team thought it was best to get it checked out. Now on the IL, Green would say that the team expects it not to be “long-term serious” and a “short stint” is probably enough.

“He’s been dealing with a little bit of shoulder fatigue for a little while now. Something that he felt confident he could pitch through and appreciate kind of the warrior mentality to step on the mound and continue to compete for us after the last outing. It just made sense to get him an MRI and get it checked,” Green said, via SNY Mets.

“We don’t think this is long-term serious for him,” Green continued. “Think it’s a short stint, hopefully, in a few weeks, like back to throwing baseball. And I know he wants to compete for us before this year’s out. And I know he wants to get on the mound and finish strong.”

So far this season, the 31-year-old has been throwing a 4.66 ERA to go along with 51 strikeouts and 16 saves in 38.2 innings. It remains to be seen when Williams can come back to New York and finish out the season in a positive way.
