Phillies named top challenger for Dodgers in NL pennant race

The Philadelphia Phillies have emerged as the National League team best equipped to challenge the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to one sports outlet. Their case in the pennant race begins with a starting rotation built for October.

The Phillies can deploy Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez, and Jesus Luzardo in a short series. That trio gives Philadelphia the frontline pitching needed to challenge a Dodgers rotation strengthened by the addition of Tarik Skubal at the trade deadline.

Los Angeles remains the reigning back-to-back World Series champion, but its August struggles have exposed vulnerabilities. The Dodgers enter Monday having lost eight of their last 10 games. They snapped a seven-game losing streak Saturday before falling 4-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Phillies also added Luis Arraez to bolster an offense that has struggled to reach base consistently. His contact-oriented approach gives the lineup another dimension as the Phillies pursue a postseason berth.

In a co-authored article, FOX Sports writers Deesha Thosar and Rowan Kavner identified Philadelphia as the National League club best equipped to take down the Dodgers. Thosar wrote the following about the Phillies’ rotation.

“Philly has Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez, and Jesus Luzardo as a formidable top three in its starting rotation.”

Kavner also considered the Chicago Cubs, who recently swept Los Angeles, before choosing Philadelphia. He added:

“If I had to choose one, I guess I’d lean toward Philadelphia based on what we saw last October.”

The 2025 NLDS helped shape that confidence. Los Angeles won the series 3-1, although Kavner argued the matchup was closer than the final result indicated.

However, Philadelphia must still secure its postseason spot before another meeting becomes possible.

Even so, elite starting pitching can transform a short postseason series. Wheeler, Sanchez, and Luzardo give the Phillies three starters capable of making the Dodgers’ pursuit of a third consecutive World Series championship considerably more difficult.
