49ers bring in ex-Bills RB for workout amid Christian McCaffrey absence

The San Francisco 49ers are squeezing whatever is left out of Christian McCaffrey. But the 49ers sat McCaffrey out Monday over what became described as “tightness.” SF opted to bring in a former Buffalo Bills running back in response to the NFL Training Camp injury.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed who tried out for the 49ers Monday including the ex-Bills player.

“Veteran RBs Nyheim Miller-Hines and Zamir White tried out for the 49ers, and RB Blake Watson visited them,” Schefter posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.

Again, SF chose to rest McCaffrey and are managing him.

Hines represents the former Bills back who visited SF. He also began his first four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before joining Buffalo in 2022. He played his final season with quarterback Josh Allen and company in 2023.

Hines eventually bounced around the league in going from the Cleveland Browns (2024), then Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints in 2025. He played in a combined four games for the latter two teams. But Hines carried the ball twice for -2 yards for the former.

Miller-Hines arrived to the Colts as one of the fastest NFL Scouting Combine performers for the running back room, turning in a 4.38 time in the 40-yard dash. Yet that speed never got him to land in days one and two of his draft class. He fell to the Colts with the 104th overall selection of the fourth round.

So Miller-Hines rises as a possible fill-in amid the new NFL Injury concern among 49er fans. But White is another veteran option with past starting experience as a former Las Vegas Raiders performer. The 26-year-old Watson, meanwhile, last saw regular season action with the Denver Broncos in 2024.
