ClutchPoints’ Week 12 WNBA power rankings

The WNBA’s regular season has reached the point where every game carries added weight. With the calendar turned to August and the campaign winding down, the standings are beginning to separate into clear tiers.

The week produced several emphatic results as some teams continued to establish themselves among the league’s most reliable forces, while others delivered eye-catching victories. The W’s top squads remained difficult to beat, and surprising underdogs continued their rise with more important wins. At the other end, certain sides endured another difficult stretch in the past week as they work through the growing pains of being a developing team. Here is how all 15 teams stack up in this week’s power rankings.

1. Minnesota Lynx

With Minnesota becoming the first to clinch its spot in the 2026 playoffs, it’s just reminding the rest of the WNBA why it remains the team to beat. The Lynx suffered a shocking loss to the LA Sparks, but that wasn’t the most important part of their week — it was the quality of the response. After the 89-82 loss on Thursday, they immediately recovered by beating the Aces 98-87 and Wings 103-90 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The victory over Las Vegas was particularly significant since the Aces are one of the teams most capable of challenging Minnesota in a playoff series. Beating them by 11 points demonstrated that the Lynx can withstand the physical and tactical demands of an elite opponent.

Then came Kayla McBride’s extraordinary performance against Dallas. She hit a WNBA-record 10 3-pointers and scored 43 points total, providing the offensive explosion that turned a competitive game into another easy Minnesota victory.

Minnesota’s overall record is the strongest in the league, but the Lynx land in first for more than just the standings. They have combined consistency with resilience and the ability to win in different ways, and following up their one blemish this week with two statement victories is proof of that.

2. Golden State Valkyries

Golden State also had an excellent week, going undefeated. The Valkyries defeated the Wings 94-76 on and then beat the Sparks 84-78 despite nearly giving away a major lead. The Valkyries handled two opponents it needed to beat and did so with enough authority to maintain its position near the top of the Western Conference, overall WNBA standings, and this week’s rankings.

The Valkyries have quietly built one of the league’s strongest records, and playing an unusually large number of games against other top teams so far gives their record additional strength. The Valkyries simply kept winning at the most important time, and their consistency earns them a place right behind the Lynx.

3. Washington Mystics

Washington continues to be one of the most compelling stories of the 2026 WNBA season. The Mystics beat the Wings 96-92 and Atlanta 79-74 before blowing out Phoenix 95-75 on Sunday to close out their undefeated week and extend their win streak to seven games.

The quality of this stretch deserves a ton of recognition. Dallas and Atlanta are both teams with postseason ambitions, while Phoenix is capable of producing big offensive performances, especially now with Kelsey Plum on the roster. Washington didn’t survive the week —  it controlled much of it.

The Mystics have already been establishing themselves as one of the league’s better teams recently, and this latest run strengthens the argument that they could be a dangerous playoff opponent. Washington is no longer simply a pleasant surprise.

4. New York Liberty

New York had the best week it’s had in a while and looks to finally be finding its consistency. The Liberty went 3-0, defeating Seattle twice and then producing the week’s defining result in a stunning 111-71 demolition of a slightly depleted Las Vegas lineup on Sunday, avoiding overlooking opponents it was expected to beat.

A 40-point victory over Las Vegas is difficult to dismiss as an ordinary regular-season result, even if the Aces were missing A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young due to rest. New York controlled the game and turned a matchup between two recent championship winners into a runaway victory. The Liberty’s surge currently makes them one of the hottest teams in the league, and the gap between them and those ranked ahead is now much smaller than it was a week ago.

5. Las Vegas Aces

Las Vegas narrowly defeated Indiana 86-84 on Thursday but followed that up with a 98-87 loss to Minnesota and a staggering 111-71 defeat against New York to cap off the week. Even without three of its best players on the court against the Liberty, neither of these defeats can be ignored.

The Aces are still 22-11 and remain one of the W’s most talented teams, and their victory over Indiana showed they can still win a tight game against another strong opponent. But the question surrounding this team is whether the final two games of this week reveal a temporary dip or something more concerning. For now, the larger body of work keeps Las Vegas top five, but the Aces have lost some of the separation they appeared to have over the chasing contenders.

6. Indiana Fever

Indiana had a frustrating but respectable week, losing by two points to Las Vegas before beating Chicago by four. The defeat to Las Vegas was only slightly discouraging on its own, as the Fever had an opportunity to win against one of the WNBA’s strongest teams and remained within one possession until the end.

The victory over Chicago was more important for maintaining their momentum. The Fever are still firmly in playoff position, and the team continues to show the offensive ability required to compete in high-scoring games. The issue is that Indiana has not quite put together the kind of sustained dominance that would justify placing it above the teams ranked ahead.

7. Atlanta Dream

Atlanta split its two games during the week, beating the Mercury at home but losing to the Mystics on the road. The victory over Phoenix was encouraging because Atlanta’s offense looked capable of taking control. The loss to Washington, however, exposed the team’s current limitation: It hasn’t been able to consistently separated itself from other strong playoff contenders.

Atlanta has still looked excellent during the 2026 WNBA season overall and belong in this upper group, but the teams above them have recently produced either better results or more convincing victories against elite competition. Atlanta remains a dangerous postseason threat, especially once its offense gets rolling, but the team needs a stronger closing stretch to move back toward the top five.

8. Dallas Wings

Dallas had a rough week, to say the least. The Wings lost to Washington, Golden State and then Minnesota. It was a difficult stretch of their schedule, and facing all strong opponents deserves consideration.

Still, going 0-3 in a week has consequences in a power ranking. The Wings’ record keeps them in the playoff picture for now, but their current trajectory and struggle to notch consistent wins is a concern as the regular season comes to an end.

9. Los Angeles Sparks

The Sparks split their two games, impressively defeating Minnesota before narrowly losing to Golden State. That opening victory is arguably the most impressive result of the week for any team outside the upper echelon. Beating the Lynx demonstrates that the Sparks can compete with the W’s best when their execution is sharp.

The problem is consistency, and that’s not a problem that’ll likely go away now that they’re without a powerhouse scorer in Plum. The victory was most likely the exception to the rule as the Sparks remain outside the group of serious contenders, but this week showed that they shouldn’t be treated as an easy opponent. Their ceiling is higher than the record suggests, and they can realistically play spoiler pretty effectively.

10. Portland Fire

The Fire beat Toronto and Seattle in a fairly productive week that broke a five-game losing streak. Those victories were exactly what Portland needed since it has not been consistent enough to enter the upper tier. However, the team did demonstrate the ability to capitalize on favorable matchups.

The Seattle game was especially revealing because Portland had to withstand a high-scoring effort rather than relying on a defensive slugfest. Portland is still below the playoff contending level, but the recent results suggest this is a team that can make the final portion of the season uncomfortable for its opponents.

11. Chicago Sky

The Sky opened their week with a loss to Phoenix, rebounded by beating LA, but then lost to Indiana. The outcome isn’t that impressive, but the Sky were competitive in all three games.

The victory over the Sparks was a notable result, but the problem is that close losses continue to accumulate. Chicago needs more victories rather than merely competitive performances.

12. Connecticut Sun

Connecticut moves up slightly after producing one of the week’s more surprising results. The Sun defeated the Mercury thanks to Brittney Griner’s last-second block, which deserves credit. Connecticut did not simply benefit from a soft opponent — it managed to hold Phoenix to 72 points and finish the game on top.

13. Phoenix Mercury

Phoenix’s week was a perfect example of its inconsistency. The Mercury beat Chicago 106-101 last Monday and then lost three in a row to the Dream, Sun, and Mystics to frustratingly finish 1-3 on the week.

The victory over Chicago proves that Phoenix possesses offensive potential, but the following results show why that potential has not translated into a strong overall season. The loss to Connecticut is particularly damaging since the Sun have spent this WNBA season near the bottom of the standings. Phoenix has enough talent to produce an explosive night, especially with the addition of Plum, but it needs much greater consistency to climb in this ranking.

14. Toronto Tempo

Toronto’s inaugural season clearly remains a work in progress. The Tempo fell to Golden State by 11 and to Portland by six, and the similar margins tell the whole story: Toronto has been competitive in stretches but has struggled to close out games, especially against stronger teams.

The Tempo have shown they’re not yet ready to compete consistently with the W’s established contenders, and that should not be surprising for an expansion franchise. But Toronto shows a ton of promise for the future. Every game provides an opportunity to establish chemistry, build up each player’s roles, and identify which pieces can form the foundation of the franchise’s next stage. That’s where the Tempo’s focus should be for the rest of this season.

15. Seattle Storm

Seattle has endured perhaps the most difficult week —  and overall season —  in the WNBA. The Storm lost to New York twice before falling to Portland. The encouraging part is that Seattle remained competitive against those two teams. The discouraging part is that competitive defeats do not change a 6-28 record.

At this point, Seattle needs to determine which young players can become long-term cornerstones and how the roster should be constructed around them. There are flashes of potential, but the immediate results place the Storm firmly at the bottom.

The biggest lesson from this week’s rankings is that the standings alone do not tell the entire story. Minnesota has the best record and deserves the top spot, but Golden State or Washington may be playing the best basketball of anyone right now.

Meanwhile, sides like Las Vegas, Indiana, and Atlanta suddenly have questions to answer. With the postseason approaching, those shifts could matter just as much as the stats accumulated over the first several months. The championship picture remains open, but the window is officially starting to close.
