Why Christian McCaffrey is missing 49ers training camp practice on Monday

The San Francisco 49ers are currently taking part in training camp as they gear up to kick off their preseason slate later this week. The 49ers are hoping for a much healthier year in 2026 than they endured in 2025, when they battled to make the divisional round of the NFC playoffs.

On Monday, the team got a concerning update regarding star running back Christian McCaffrey.

“Christian McCaffrey is sitting out practice today with what the team describes as ‘tightness,'” reported Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area on X, formerly Twitter.

“Just managing. A little sore, but he’s fine,” said offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic on X.

McCaffrey was able to stay mostly healthy last year after essentially an injury-riddled last couple of seasons, and played very well for the 49ers, helping carry the offense despite the frequent absences of quarterback Brock Purdy.

Hopefully, his current issue is nothing serious and won’t extend into the upcoming regular season.

Meanwhile, the 49ers also endured injuries to star defensive players like Fred Warner and Nick Bosa last year, making it even more impressive that they were able to claw out a win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs on the road before bowing out to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in the following round.

On paper, the 49ers still have one of the most talented rosters in the NFC landscape, but it won’t matter if their star players aren’t able to stay on the field.

The 49ers are set to kick off their regular season in exactly one month with a tough test against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia.
