Receivers at the NFL level play with a certain level of confidence and swagger. It is the nature of the position, and because of that, pass catchers are often hesitant to show any sort of respect to their arch-rivals; players at the cornerback position. Ja’Marr Chase is one of the best receivers in the NFL.

The Cincinnati Bengals star has 520 catches for 6,837 yards and 54 touchdowns through five seasons, all of which he earned a Pro Bowl nod for. Chase even led the NFL in receptions (127) and receiving yards (1,708) in 2024. Joe Burrow’s favorite target wasn’t afraid to give some of the top cornerbacks their flowers, though. When asked who the toughest defensive backs to go up against are, Chase gave a predictable answer.

“Denzel Ward, Patrick Surtain, [those] are definitely the two guys by far,” Chase said when asked who the best cornerbacks in the NFL are.

Ward is a divisional foe on the Cleveland Browns who Chase sees twice a year, and Surtain became just the third cornerback to be named the Defensive Player of the Year this century when he earned that award in 2024.

Typically, though, it hasn’t mattered who is lined up opposite of Chase. The LSU product puts up huge numbers week in and week out, and his pass catching running mate, Tee Higgins, has proven to be one of the best number two receiving threats in the NFL. The aerial attack has never been an issue in Cincinnati, but the Bengals really need the defense to pick it up this season.
