Black Lives Matter makes $200,000 HBCU athletics investment

Black Lives Matter Sports is putting its mission into action, investing nearly $200,000 into nonprofit organizations, HBCU athletics, and community-based initiatives working to create meaningful change. The investment directs resources toward programs supporting Black communities both on and beyond the playing field, reinforcing the role sports can play as a vehicle for opportunity and long-term impact.

Founded by social impact leader and Black Lives Matter Global Network Chairman Cicley Gay, BLM Sports donated $166,000 to 19 organizations in addition to supporting several HBCU athletic programs and community initiatives. The investment aims to expand access, strengthen institutions, and create opportunities for students, young athletes, women, and families.

Organizations receiving support include the Allen Iverson Classic, Atlanta Dream, Black College Gamers Association, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia, Community Through Hoops, Crown 3 Basketball, Dynamic Cares, Edward and Tamara George Foundation, Fab 5 Foundation, Ghana Community Fitness Day, Girls Who Brunch Tour, Grind Pretty, Josie’s Girls, League of Industry Moms, Love Quest Foundation, National CARES Mentoring Movement, NY3on3, Soul Reborn, and the Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation.

“Sports have always had the power to bring people together, but their impact should extend far beyond the court or the field,” Gay said. “This investment is about supporting organizations and institutions that are already on the ground changing lives.”

While the specific HBCU athletic programs receiving support have not been publicly identified, BLM Sports emphasized the importance of investing in HBCU athletics. According to EIN Presswire, the support is intended to help programs provide student-athletes with resources, exposure, and development opportunities during their collegiate careers and beyond.

The investment comes as HBCU athletics continues to gain national attention through major partnerships, sponsorships, television exposure, and sporting events. However, increased visibility does not always translate into increased resources. BLM Sports’ investment puts financial support behind programs serving student-athletes and helping them capitalize on those growing opportunities.

The commitment also extends beyond college campuses. Through its support of community-based organizations, BLM Sports is investing in programs centered on mentorship, youth development, women, and families. Supporting organizations already embedded within their communities allows those groups to expand their reach and continue creating opportunities for the people they serve.

“We cannot continue asking community organizations and HBCU programs to solve major challenges without giving them the resources to do it,” Gay said. “If we want stronger students, stronger athletes, stronger families, and stronger communities, we must invest accordingly.”
