Team reporter Vince Goodwill went further into the situation, citing Thompson as a reason why Detroit has been reluctant to give a max extension to the rising star center.

“There’s a lot of people within the Pistons organization that view Ausar Thompson as the second best player on the team and not Jalen Duren, per @VinceGoodwill. This has affected Duren negotiations with the Pistons,” the post read.

Jalen Duren might need to look elsewhere if contract talks don’t improve. He can sign for the qualifying offer and test free agency in 2027, putting the Pistons in a tricky situation.

Duren had the best regular season of his career to date. He averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and two assists per game throughout 70 appearances. However, he regressed to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest during the postseason.

Detroit is coming off an incredible 60-win campaign this past season, securing the first seed in the Eastern Conference standings. They earned their first series win since 2008 after beating the Orlando Magic in seven games before losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games in the East Semifinals.

The Pistons will hope for their situation with Duren to have a good ending. They have solid potential as playoff contenders, seeking their best period of success since the mid-2000s.
