Nneka Ogwumike’s next career ‘project’ after retiring from WNBA

Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike will be retiring from the league after this season, putting a cap on her 15-year career. She’s been able to accomplish a lot throughout her journey, and even though she’s stepping away from the WNBA, she’ll still be playing basketball, according to Front Office Sports.

“Nneka Ogwumike intends to play in Project B, a new global basketball league debuting next January, following her announcement that she will retire from the WNBA after this season, per [Front Office Sports],” ClutchPoints wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Ogwumike, as well as other players who will be playing in the league, will have an equity stake in the league. It makes sense why she’d be involved in that league, and the hope is that it continues to grow even when she decides to stop playing.

There’s no doubt that Ogwumike can still play with the best of the league, as she’s currently averaging 16.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game with the Sparks this season. Even though her body isn’t completely feeling the burn of 15 seasons, she’s happy to say that she left the game on her terms.

“I feel very content with where I’ve left my career,” Ogwumike said in an interview with Taylor Rooks. “With 15 years under my belt, I feel very content with what we were able to achieve coming into this season, where we see the league today. Even when I think about the type of players I’ve been able to play with, against Tina Thompson and also against Angel Reese. I was in the league during the Maya Moore era. I’m in the league during the A’ja Wilson era.”

It’ll be interesting to see what else Ogwumike plans to get into after her WNBA career comes to an end.
