Yankees trade catcher to Pirates in post-deadline move
The New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates managed to agree on a trade on Wednesday even though the August 3 deadline is well in the rearview mirror. It’s a move that sends a veteran catcher from the New York organization to Pittsburgh.
Reports indicate that Christian Bethancourt was officially traded to Pittsburgh, according to Pirates insider Jason Mackey. The Yankees received cash in the deal, while the Pirates add an experienced catcher to the organization.
“Pirates have acquired C Christian Bethancourt from the Yankees for cash,” Mackey reported. “Bethancourt, 34, has hit .270 with 9 2B, 14 HR, 45 RBI, an .811 OPS, and 35 R in 67 G in Triple-A this season. Would imagine not great news for Endy Rodriguez. Bethancourt expected to join taxi squad.”
The Yankees and Pirates were able to finalize this trade after the deadline because Bethancourt is a minor league player who was not on New York’s 40-man roster. The right-handed hitter has eight years of MLB experience under his belt, with his last appearance in the majors coming in 2024 with the Miami Marlins and Chicago Cubs.
He’s played decently well this year at Triple-A. He leaves the Yankees organization for the Pirates with a career .229 batting average and .259 OBP in the majors while recording 284 hits, 35 home runs, and 135 RBIs.
This story is currently developing, and more information will be available soon.
