Mets owner Steve Cohen catches attention with brutally honest David Stearns admission

It has been a disaster of a season for the New York Mets. The Mets are in last place in the NL East and have one of the worst records in the National League. Mets owner Steve Cohen recently spoke about the future of manager Andy Green.

Now, Cohen is talking about his President of Baseball Operations, David Stearns, per Danny Abriano of SNY.

“We might have taken too much risk as far as when you think about all the changes that were made,” Cohen said. “Whenever there are significant changes, sometimes it takes a while to integrate. Those are the things I’m looking at. It’s an example of where we can be better.”

The Mets made a ton of changes from last year’s team. Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz walked in free agency, while Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil were traded. Carlos Mendoza was also fired mid-season as the manager, resulting in changes to the coaching staff as a whole.

“I just think when you add new players, when you add a coaching staff. Maybe adding players with an injury history. When you add risk upon risk upon risk — one risk alone, but when you add enough risk to something, all of a sudden you can have a dispersion of results. It doesn’t mean that it had to turn out bad. It just means that you have dispersion of results, and maybe the possibility of an undesirable result is more of a possibility because of the risk you’re taking,” Cohen added. “I equate it to running a portfolio. The more risk you take in a portfolio — yeah, it can have major upside, but also your downside can be bigger. And so you can have bigger variance in results. I think that’s what happened here.”

Stearns has been the President of Baseball Operations since 2024. The team made it to the NLCS that year, but missed the playoffs the next season, and will miss again this year.

The Mets are 57-70 on the season, which is the worst record in the NL East. They are 17.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the division. Meanwhile, they are 11 games out in the National League wild card race and are only ahead of the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies in the league. The Mets finish their series with the San Diego Padres on Wednesday afternoon.
