Phillies agree to contract with ex-Yankees star Nestor Cortes

Nestor Cortes has been out of the majors this year. The former New York Yankees star, Cortes, underwent surgery at the end of last season, which has kept him off the pitching mound. Cortes recently began throwing, and multiple teams, including the Philadelphia Phillies, were interested in his services.

Now, Cortes has come to an agreement with the Phillies, according to Robert Murray of FanSided.

The 31-year-old pitcher has agreed to a Major League contract with the Phillies, and he will either be added to the bullpen or help in the rotation. Cortes was drafted in the 36th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2017 Rule 5 draft and would make his MLB debut as a relief pitcher that season. Since then, Cortes has spent time with the Yankees, Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, and San Diego Padres.

His best season came in 2022, when he went 12-4 with a 2.44 ERA with the Yankees. He was named an All-Star that year and finished eighth in the Cy Young voting. In his career, he is 35-25 with a 3.80 ERA in 94 starts and 143 total appearances.

The Phillies are 69-58 on the season, which places them in second in the NL East. They also currently are in possesion of the second Wild Card spot in the National League. The Phillies are also a game ahead of the San Diego Padres, who currently have the third Wild Card spot. They are also three games in front of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Phils will look to continue their winning streak as they continue a series with the Miami Marlins on Wednesday.
