Steve Cohen leaves door open for Andy Green to return as Mets manager next season

The New York Mets have been treading water recently, currently sitting at 57-70 after splitting the first two games of their home series vs the San Diego Padres. While the Mets aren’t as far behind in the standings as they were a month ago, they’re still looking at a second straight season of missing out on the postseason altogether.

Andy Green has been serving as the interim Mets manager since the team fired Carlos Mendoza from the post in late June, and recently, team owner Steve Cohen spoke on Green’s potential future with the team.

“I’m going to take him at face value. He’s telling us that he wants to go back to the front office. We’re going to do a managerial search, and if it turns out he wants us to throw his hat into the ring, that would be great,” said Cohen, per SNY Mets on X, formerly Twitter.

Clearly, the Mets are intent on keeping their options open this upcoming offseason to try to bring the right person in for the job.

Cohen has spent relentlessly over the past few offseasons trying to assemble a contender in New York, putting the Mets in a race with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the highest payroll in the MLB. Among his most notable moves was signing Juan Soto away from the crosstown rival New York Yankees two offseasons ago, but it hasn’t resulted in much on-field success for the team thus far.

Perhaps finding the right manager to lead the clubhouse will give the Mets the boost they need to get back into contention after two straight down years.
