Lakers rumors: Buss family drama won’t hold up Mark Walter’s $12.5 billion sale
The Los Angeles Lakers have been at the center of attention in the basketball world recently due to Mark Walter’s shocking sale of the team to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger less than a year after buying it. Since then, reports have emerged that the Buss family will also be selling its share of the team, potentially ousting Jeanie Buss from her role as team governor, but Jeanie has since fired back at those claims.
Whatever ends up happening on the Buss front, it seems that Walter is intent on selling the team, as reported recently by Sam Amick and Dan Woike of The Athletic.
“A source with knowledge of Mark Walter’s thinking told The Athletic that the current Lakers owner didn’t believe the latest Buss family disagreement would threaten his deal with Iger and Kushner, which values the Lakers at a record $12.5 billion.
“Two other league and team sources also said they don’t expect the conflict to impact the transaction that will push the Lakers into their next chapter,” they reported.
The Walter sale comes amid reports of an FBI probe into some of his business dealings, with many speculating that the shocking move came in an attempt to liquidate his assets should anything materialize on that front. Many Lakers fans were happy with the new ownership last year when the Buss family opted to sell its majority stake in the team to Walter, who has experienced great success as the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
However, those good vibes quickly dissipated when it was announced that Iger and Kushner would be heading the new ownership group.
It remains to be seen what will come of the latest chapter of Buss family drama.
