England have released five non-playing members of their First Test squad to their respective counties ahead of the County Championship round beginning August 20. The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed the move on August 19, with the players set to represent their counties while the Test match at Headingley continues.

The five players freed are Shoaib Bashir, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Matthew Fisher and Ollie Pope. Each will return to county cricket for the duration of the round before potentially rejoining the England setup ahead of the Second Test.

Pakistan are touring England for a three-match Test series that forms part of the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle. The First Test at Headingley, Leeds, runs from August 19 to 23, and the County Championship round beginning August 20 runs concurrently with the closing days of that fixture.

Why does England release non-playing squad members to their counties?

It is standard practice in English cricket for players who are named in a Test squad but not selected in the playing eleven to return to their counties when a County Championship round falls during a Test match. The arrangement ensures those players remain in competitive match action rather than sitting unused as reserves across the full five days of a Test.

The County Championship is a first-class competition, so any runs scored or wickets taken during these fixtures contribute to a player's first-class record. For England's management, keeping the wider squad active in first-class cricket is a practical way to maintain form and fitness across the group without any disruption to the Test match itself.

Which counties benefit from the released England players?

Surrey receive two of the five released players in Fisher and Pope, giving the county a notable addition ahead of their high-stakes clash against Nottinghamshire. Bashir and Carse will go up against each other in the Division Two clash between Derbyshire and Durham, and Essex are joined by Sam Cook for their clash against Somerset.

The release was confirmed on the opening day of the First Test, meaning all five players have the full duration of the county round available to them. The timing allows each player to complete a meaningful stint of first-class cricket before the England squad reconvenes ahead of the next Test in the series.
