Mike McCarthy announces intriguing Steelers captains decision for 2026 season

The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently gearing up to kick off the upcoming 2026 NFL season. The Steelers this year will see the reunion of head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who won a Super Bowl together well over a decade ago with the Green Bay Packers.

Now, McCarthy has made an interesting decision regarding the Steelers’ team captains for the new season.

“Mike McCarthy will not have season-long captains. Instead, he will name captains weekly,” reported Mark Kaboly of the Pat McAfee Show on X, formerly Twitter.

It’s safe to assume that Rodgers will likely be a captain for the Steelers his fair share of games this season, as Pittsburgh looks to break the cycle of ugly Wild Card round exits that defined the last few years of the Mike Tomlin era.

Last season, the Steelers were obliterated by the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round, marking an unceremonious end to Tomlin’s tenure with the team and opening the door for Pittsburgh to bring in McCarthy, who last coached the Dallas Cowboys.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how much Rodgers has left in the tank at the age of 42. While his mobility is virtually nonexistent at this stage of his career, Rodgers did demonstrate last year that he still has one of the strongest arms in the NFL and is capable of making otherworldly throws on occasion.

Together, Rodgers and McCarthy will look to quiet the skeptics who don’t think the Steelers have done much to improve this offseason.

In any case, the Steelers are slated to kick off their new season on September 13 at home against the Atlanta Falcons at 1:00 pm ET.
