Why Joe Milton III chose Cowboys’ practice squad return after release

Coach Brian Schottenheimer’s Dallas Cowboys are expected to start the 2026 season with Dak Prescott as their top quarterback and Sam Howell as his backup, but a member of the practice squad, Joe Milton III, has had an unforgettable impact on fans. Milton III’s rifle arm and cool demeanor didn’t prevent him from being released last month, but the Cowboys brought him back because of his potential.

On Monday, Milton III’s top reasons for rejoining the Cowboys were shared by journalist Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and they pointed to trust and a burning desire to get better as a quarterback in a Dallas uniform.

“Somewhat, but not really,” Milton III said when asked if it was a hard decision to rejoin the Cowboys after being waived. “I have a lot of relationships here and guys I trust with my development.”

Fortunately, Milton III isn’t letting his release impact his confidence, as he still believes he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

“I’m still the best quarterback in my eyes,” Milton III said. “It is what it is. It’s something you got to live with and take to the chin.”

Milton III compiled 183 yards, one passing touchdown and two interceptions in four games with the Cowboys last season. He has the support of Prescott going forward and now has a chance to take a step back and focus on his development while the Cowboys prepare for their season opener on Sunday, September 13, against the New York Giants in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
