Old Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has become one of the most interesting stories in college football. He put together a phenomenal performance in last season’s college football playoffs, and he received permission to return to the Rebels, leading his team to an opening-season victory against Louisville on Sunday evening.

However, despite his stellar play and Old Miss’ record under Lane Kiffin last season, ESPN football analyst Dan Orlovsky is bullish on their chances as contenders. He spoke about it on the Labor Day edition of ESPN’s First Take.

“Uh, no, they cannot win a title, not with that defense. Uh, Chambliss will keep them in every game. They could beat anybody because of Chambliss,” he said.

Orlovsky then went on to assess Chambliss’s viability as an NFL quarterback, saying that height is the only thing holding him back from being the number one player in the 2027 draft class.

“I think if Trinidad Chambliss was 6’3″, he would be the clear favorite to be the number one pick in next year’s NFL draft. And I love Arch Manning, and C.J. Carr, and Dante Moore, and whatnot. This kid throws the ball before guys are open better than anybody in college football. Anticipation, which is not necessarily a huge calling card for some of the college quarterbacks nowadays, he’s got it in waves, and I think that’s what separates him. His pure throwing ability is so different than all the other college quarterbacks, maybe outside of Dante Moore.”

He then compared him to former Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward.

“You guys are a couple years older than me. He’s got a lot of Charlie Ward in him, you know, just that, treally special, smooth athlete that’s calm in all situations and does everything incredibly well. Um, even in that rocky first half, you, you could see that it was coming, and just… I think his anticipation is just very unique to him. So I think that he keeps them in every game and gives them, gives them the ability to beat anybody.

Still, Orlovsky emphasized that Ole Miss’s defense has to be better as they face a tough schedule ahead.

“This defense just right now, week one is not gonna be good enough to beat the LSUs, the Georgias. Shoot, Florida looked really good on offense this past weekend. So until that comes along, they’re not title contenders.”
