Padres get huge injury update as postseason draws near

The San Diego Padres are battling for the final spot in the National League Wild Card standings. At the moment, the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies lead the NL Wild Card while the Arizona Diamondbacks and Padres are competing for the third position. The Padres are hoping to be as healthy as possible for the stretch run of the season. It was recently revealed that starting pitcher Nick Pivetta will return soon, and Miguel Andujar is also working his way back from an injury.

Andujar suffered a right wrist fracture in July. He is expected to return at some point in September, according to MLB.com. The veteran infielder/designated hitter has been taking swings in the batting cage as well as participating in defensive drills on the field. Andujar seems to be trending in the right direction, but a specific return date has yet to be revealed.

Updates on Miguel Andujar’s injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available.

At 75-68, the Padres are currently 11 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West division. Meanwhile, they are a half-game behind the Diamondbacks for the third and final NL Wild Card spot. Both teams are unlikely to catch the Cubs and Phillies, who are five games up and 4.5 games up in the Wild Card. There aren’t many teams especially close to the Padres and Diamondbacks that are trailing either, as the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals are four games back of the final Wild Card spot.

In other words, it seems as if San Diego and Arizona will be competing for that final position for the rest of the season. Andujar’s injury return — whenever it does occur — will give the Padres a crucial boost.
