Commanders re-signing 1-time Super Bowl champion after cutting him

There is probably only so much the Washington Commanders can do to repair the offensive line during the 2026 season, but perhaps they can still provide quarterback Jayden Daniels with as many functional pass-catching options as possible. The team is signing Van Jefferson to the practice squad, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Washington cut the veteran wide receiver at the end of training camp, but it is not ready to give up on him completely.

Jefferson, who won a Super Bowl ring with the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021-22 campaign, recorded 29 receptions for 350 yards and one touchdown on the Tennessee Titans last season. He could be an adequate replacement if someone on the active roster suffers an injury. A Commanders reporter sees the value in this move and believes the team’s WR room is looking much deeper than it did a year ago.

“Had a good camp,” ESPN’s John Keim posted on X. “Just a lot more depth and variety at the position compared to last season. Adds to the depth even on the PS. Far better situation than 2025.”

Daniels must be on high alert behind a shaky O-Line that is missing starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil, but when the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year does have time to throw, he will have an interesting group of wideouts at his disposal. Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs lead the way, while rookie third-round draft pick Antonio Williams tries to quickly make a name for himself. Van Jefferson will be ready to slide in if needed, though.

The Commanders are inching closer toward Sunday’s season-opening NFC East battle versus the Philadelphia Eagles.
