Zeev Buium breaks silence after signing $75 million contract extension with Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks were the most futile team in the National Hockey League in 2025-26, but the franchise has fully committed to the rebuild and already begun looking to the future.

A key part of that was locking up Zeev Buium, one of the key pieces that came back to British Columbia in the trade that sent Quinn Hughes to Minnesota. Buium signed an eight-year, $75.04 million extension with general manager Ryan Johnson and the Canucks late last week.

The deal carries a $9.38 million AAV and kicks in for the 2027-28 season after Buium finishes the final year of his entry-level contract.

“It was pretty easy for me. When they came with the offer it wasn’t a hard decision to make,” the 20-year-old said shortly after signing, per NHL.com. “Personally, I wanted to be here for eight years, I didn’t want it to be shorter, and I’m really glad. I love the city. I love the fan base.

“I love where this organization is going, and I want to be a Canuck, I want to be here, and hopefully the end goal is obviously a Stanley Cup, and hopefully bring that back one day, and through all the years just really give the fans and everyone here in Vancouver something to cheer for.”

Buium chose to make Vancouver home for the long haul. He will now be a critical part of the Canucks’ blue line as the organization looks to return to legitimate Stanley Cup contention in a couple of years.

Originally selected 12th overall by the Wild in the 2024 NHL Draft, the San Diego, California native recorded 26 points in 76 games split between the Wild and Canucks in 2025-26.

He was terrific at the University of Denver the previous two seasons, amassing 98 points over 83 games before transitioning to the National Hockey League.

Buium will now be a fixture on Vancouver’s young blue line, and he should be a candidate to get reps with the top power-play unit in 2026-27.

“The moment I got here and got traded here, the second I got to Vancouver, the fans, the people, my teammates, the organization accepted me arms wide open, and have treated me amazing and I just think this place and this market and how passionate the fans are and the people are here, it’s really special,” Buium added.

The Canucks open their campaign against the Edmonton Oilers on Sept. 29.
