Michigan football team narrowly escaped a disastrous home upset against Western Michigan on Saturday night, winning 13-12 after officials controversially added one second back to the game clock. Although the dramatic finish spared Michigan from a season-opening disaster, Underwood’s position as the starter is no longer guaranteed under new head coach Kyle Whittingham. At a Monday press conference, Whittingham made it clear that there is a limit to his patience with the quarterback position.

The pressure is mounting on Underwood to make that improvement quickly, especially given troubling statistics. According to On3, the sophomore quarterback was Michigan’s lowest-graded offensive player against Western Michigan on Pro Football Focus, with a career-worst overall rating of 35.8 and five turnover-worthy plays. Underwood himself acknowledged to the Associated Press that he believed the game had already concluded before the referees intervened. With the Oklahoma Sooners visiting Ann Arbor this Saturday, Underwood must elevate his game promptly or otherwise, Whittingham may have no choice but to consider a change at quarterback.
