Dodgers on wrong end of Nationals star CJ Abrams’ impressive feat

Los Angeles Dodgers hitter-pitcher Shohei Ohtani was not the only versatile star at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, as Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams made a good account of himself.

While the Nationals lost, 7-5, Abrams showed why he is one of the league’s brightest young players. At the top of the fourth inning, he blasted his 30th home run of the season.

The 25-year-old Abrams, who has been moonlighting at second base, sent the ball flying to right-center to tie the game at 1-1. He became the first shortstop in team history to reach 30 home runs in a season.

In July, the two-time All-Star set the team record for most home runs by a shortstop, surpassing Ian Desmond, who had 25 dingers in 2012.

Despite Abrams’ memorable night, the Dodgers captured their fourth straight win, improving to 86-57. The Nationals dropped to 67-78.

Mookie Betts was the hero, hitting a three-run home run in the eighth inning to fend off Washington. The Dodgers went 6-0 against the Nationals this year.

Ohtani did not play for the fourth straight time due to lingering injuries.

With other guys stepping up to the plate, Dodgers coach Dave Roberts acknowledged that they need to do better heading into the playoffs after a mini-slump in August.

“I think, offensively, we’re starting to do some good things,” said Roberts in a report from Yahoo! Sports Jack Harris on Saturday.
