Ole Miss stuns Louisville on wild game-winning field goal

Ole Miss football witnessed an unreal outing from wide receiver Deuce Alexander. Louisville still kept plugging away and Jeff Brohm’s crew tied things up late at 38-38. But Lucas Carneiro booted the Cardinals’ overtime hopes out, nailing the walk-off field goal to win 41-38.

Carneiro kicked a 48-yarder as time expired inside Nissan Stadium at Nashville, lifting Ole Miss to 1-0.

His game-winner also hands Rebels head coach Pete Golding his first-ever season opener win, all after taking over for Lane Kiffin during the College Football Playoffs. But Golding claims a win over a ranked foe too, as Louisville came in No. 24 overall.

Both teams started slow, with the Cards taking a 3-0 lead entering the second quarter. Yet the Rebels led by the low score of 10-6 at halftime. So both offenses looked stagnant to begin.

But fireworks exploded on the field from there. Louisville managed to outscore Ole Miss 32-31 during the second half. UL quarterback Lincoln Kienholz delivered 307 yards on 18-of-29 passing for two touchdowns and no interceptions. Kienholz added 69 yards rushing and scored one more touchdown off his legs. Tre Richardson and Treyshun Hurry emerged as his leading wideouts, both catching four passes but Richardson leading with 83 yards.

But Kienholz didn’t out-duel Trinidad Chambliss in the end, as he made his anticipated return. The dual-threat impressed by shredding the Cards with 336 passing yards and tossing three touchdowns with one pick.

Alexander rose as Chambliss’ top target, catching five passes for 159 yards and scoring twice. Caleb Odom caught the other touchdown pass and finished with three catches for 66 yards.
