Rams legend Aaron Donald’s return draws honest takeaway from Christian McCaffrey

Christian McCaffrey knows exactly what kind of problem Aaron Donald presents, even after two and a half years away from football. With the 49ers set to face the Rams in Week 1 in Melbourne, Australia, McCaffrey was asked about facing a defensive line that now includes the future Hall of Famer, and his answer left no doubt about the respect Donald still commands around the league.

“He’s a force, man,” McCaffrey told reporters. “He’s such a good player, has been his entire career. When you’re going through the scouting report, you got to know where he is. You got to know where number 95 is.”

Donald officially ended his retirement last week, agreeing to a one-year deal worth up to $30 million with incentives to rejoin the only franchise he has ever played for. The move capped months of speculation that began when head coach Sean McVay reached out to Donald for his opinion on Myles Garrett during the Rams’ trade pursuit of the star pass rusher over the summer.

Garrett’s arrival in Los Angeles ultimately helped push Donald toward a return, giving the Rams a defensive front that now holds five of the last nine Defensive Player of the Year awards between the two of them.

For McCaffrey and the 49ers, the timing could not be much worse. San Francisco already has to prepare for one of the most explosive Rams rosters in recent memory, one that also features Matthew Stafford, Davante Adams and Puka Nacua, and now must account for a three-time Defensive Player of the Year who spent all 10 of his previous seasons tormenting opposing backfields.

Donald finished his career with 111 sacks, 10 Pro Bowl selections and eight first-team All-Pro honors before walking away in March 2024.

McCaffrey’s comments reflect just how little rust anyone around the league expects one of the greatest defensive players of all-time to show, regardless of the layoff. Even at 35, Donald is widely viewed as capable of stepping right back into a starting role and disrupting game plans the way he always has, and McCaffrey made it clear the 49ers are treating him as a full priority heading into the season opener.

With Week 1 now on the horizon, the early buzz around Donald’s return has quickly shifted from will he help the Rams to how much trouble he can cause for opponents right away, starting with a 49ers offense that will have to account for him from the opening series in Australia.
