Ben Shelton dominates Stefanos Tsitsipas at US Open to set up Carlos Alcaraz duel

Ben Shelton has picked up steam at the US Open after dominating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, in the Round of 16 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday.

Shelton dusted off Tsitsipas in just one hour and 15 minutes, including only 31 minutes in the first set, to advance to the quarterfinals.

It was the 23-year-old Shelton’s third straight victory against a player who has cracked the top 10 of the world rankings. He will try to get rid of a fourth consecutive one, but it won’t be easy, as he will next face Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday.

Alcaraz, the defending champion, marched to the quarterfinals after beating Tommy Paul, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, at the same court just a few hours before Shelton defeated Tsitsipas.

Shelton is in the quarterfinals of the US Open for the second time, including advancing to the semifinals in 2023. He said he is excited to compete against the 23-year-old Alcaraz, acknowledging the seven-time major winner’s impact.

“The level that he’s playing at is really impressive. To not play for almost five months and do what he’s doing is superhuman, and we’re happy to have him back,” said Shelton in a report from The Straits Times.

“He lights up stadiums, and I think there’s going to be fireworks again on Tuesday.”

Shelton is looking to become the first male player from the United States to win a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick at the US Open in 2003.

He has lost his three previous meetings with the second-seeded Alcaraz. They last battled at last year’s French Open.
