Kyle Shanahan looks forward to the San Francisco 49ers’ upcoming events as they prepare for the start of the 2026 NFL season.

Shanahan has been the 49ers’ head coach since 2017, entering his 10th year at the helm. He stands out as one of the top coaches in the league, often leading them to serious playoff contention.

San Francisco is all too familiar with its division rivals in the NFC West, especially the Los Angeles Rams. They open the campaign against them, but it won’t take place at the West Coast in California. It will instead happen in Australia, paving the way for multiple factors to play a role in the season opener. Even Shanahan himself was expressive about the NFL moving one of Los Angeles’ home games to Australia, per reporter David Lombardi.

“Shanahan said he was initially disappointed that NFL “let the Rams off the hook” by taking away a 49ers’ “home game” at SoFi Stadium. But after being in Melbourne for a few days, Shanahan feels “it won’t be much different here” — he expects 49ers’ fan dominance in MCG,” Lombardi wrote.

What lies ahead for Kyle Shanahan, 49ers this season

Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers will be on a mission to make another case for Super Bowl contention when healthy. Having retooled the roster this offseason, they look to be serious threats in the NFC.

Shanahan has done remarkably well in nine years at the helm. He boasts an 82-67 overall record, leading San Francisco to two Super Bowl appearances and four NFC Championship appearances. He hopes to build that resume further for the franchise.

The 49ers will attempt to improve upon their 12-5 record from the previous season. They also intend to make the playoffs for the second consecutive season and reclaim the NFC West title.

San Francisco’s regular season will get underway at the international level. They head over to Australia as they take on the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 10 at 8:35 p.m. ET.
