Red Sox’s Payton Tolle confirms 1 thing after unexpected mound moment

The Boston Red Sox earned a 3-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, maintaining their position in the playoff standings. Early in the contest, however, starting pitcher Payton Tolle had a little slip-up on the mound that he laughed about during his postgame interview in the locker room.

In the bottom of the third, the 23-year-old left-hander fell after throwing a pitch to Orioles’ slugger Pete Alonso. Tolle hilariously tried to play it off by doing a push-up on the mound before getting back to his feet and preparing for the next pitch.

While talking with media members in the locker room, the second-year pro was asked if that was the first time he’d ever done a push-up on the mound, according to Red Sox podcaster Tyler Miliken. Tolle laughed while confirming it was in fact his first in-game push-up, and declared that it was also his last.

“Yeah, that’s the first time, and that’ll be the last time,” Tolle said with a smile. “That’s as many as I’m getting out there.”

Outside of his slip-turned push-up, Payton Tolle played tremendously for the Red Sox on Sunday. He finished the contest with 12 strikeouts while allowing just four hits and one earned run through 6.0 innings pitched.

His play has been one of the main reasons the Red Sox have clawed their way back to playoff contention after a cold start to the 2026 campaign. Through 137.0 innings pitched so far this year, the former second-round pick owns a 3.23 ERA and 1.099 WHIP while totaling 159 strikeouts. He’s going from top prospect to top player in Boston, and certainly looks the part heading into the playoffs.
