Michigan doubles down on controversial win with blunt post

Michigan football woke up Sunday hearing about its controversial 13-12 win over Western Michigan. Now the Wolverines have doubled down following the much-debated ending involving quarterback Bryce Underwood and wide receiver JJ Buchanan.

Michigan posted a giant “W” post on the social media website X, formerly Twitter, which featured Buchanan’s epic touchdown grab to claim the win.

But the final play resonated with fans on Sunday. Plus became a hot topic issue among national media.

Once again, Underwood threw an incomplete pass in the back of the end zone. The play clock showed no time was remaining. However, officials reviewed the play to determine if no time indeed was remaining. Officials ruled that one second needed to placed back on the clock.

Underwood uncorked one last desperation bomb. His towering 6-foot-4 wideout Buchanan outjumped everyone and then fell backward into the end zone. Michigan fans rushed the field inside “The Big House” after the game. Plus Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham earned his first victory as coach.

So Michigan escaped the biggest upset of Labor Day weekend. And avoided taking its biggest home loss 19 years after Appalachian State stunned Michigan while the Wolverines were ranked in the top five. But the cloud of scrutiny hovered over Michigan.

Western Michigan president Ross Kavalhuna described gut-wrenching pain out of the Broncos for how they lost. Even the Big Ten released a statement on the controversial final second touchdown. The conference reviewed the next-to-last play and determined that a Western  Michigan player made contact with the football while out-of-bounds with one second left. Hence how officials called for one more second to be added.
