Padres manager Chris Stammen delivers huge Nick Pivetta update before Nationals series

The San Diego Padres are currently just outside of a playoff spot. The team was hoping to get some pitching help back from injury, but the Padres likely will not have Joe Musgrove this year.

While the team will not have Musgrove, they are getting Nick Pivetta back, per Darnay Tripp of NBC San Diego Sports.

“Craig Stammen: ‘Nick told us that he was ready… His last outing, seeing the fastball command, command of all his pitches… got his pitch count up to a spot we felt comfortable bringing him up.’ Said this was his chance to get started, will figure out the plan from there,” Tripp posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Pivetta has not pitched since the middle of April. He was 1-2 on the year with a 4.50 ERA in his four starts. He had been out with a right elbow flexor strain. He will be getting the start on Monday, but the Padres will not be moving to a six-man rotation, according to Annie Heilbrunn of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

“Stammen says at the moment, they’re not going to a six-man rotation. Pivetta threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings with Triple-A El Paso in his last rehab start; the expectations will be similar tomorrow, per Stammen,” Heilbrunn posted on X.

The Padres are 75-69 on the year, which places them in third place in the NL West and 10.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team is also currently a half game behind the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final wild card spot in the National League. The Padres begin a series with the Washington Nationals at home on Monday.
