Astros’ Jose Altuve ties Craig Biggio in franchise history with incredible feat

The Houston Astros are used to getting some great performances from veteran infielder Jose Altuve. Altuve provided yet another strong outing on Sunday, in a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Astros slugger is writing his name in the franchise history books.

“Altuve ties Craig Biggio with 225 3-hit games. Most in franchise history,” Astros reporter Julia Morales posted to X, formerly Twitter.

Houston ended up losing to the Diamondbacks on Sunday, 3-2. Altuve finished his day with three hits and one run scored. He posted four at-bats, and also ended up with a double.

Houston has relied on Altuve for offense for many years. The slugger has helped the Astros win two World Series titles, in 2017 and 2022. He has been named an All-Star nine times in his lengthy and successful career.

The veteran has battled injury this season. He still has been quite effective in Houston’s lineup. This year, Altuve has 15 home runs and 44 RBIs. He is batting at a .247 average, with four hits in his last two games.

Biggio, like Altuve, also played a major role for Houston. Biggio played for the Astros from 1988-2007. He finished his Major League Baseball career with 3,060 hits and 291 home runs. He played his entire career with that franchise.

Altuve is now chasing Biggio in another category. That is to reach 3,000 career hits. Currently, Biggio is the only Astros player with that many hits, per MLB.com. Altuve now has 2,499.

“Hopefully, I’m going to be able to be around and see him get 3,000 hits,” Astros manager Joe Espada said, per MLB.com. “That would be incredible. I’ve been very fortunate and blessed to be around him.”

The Astros fell to 73-71 on the season after the loss Sunday. Houston still leads the American League West standings.
