Orioles’ Luis Robert Jr.’s ‘low grade’ injury update is a silver lining, for now

The Baltimore Orioles were taking a chance when they signed oft-injured Luis Robert Jr. off the waiver wire. Shortly after putting him in their lineup, Robert injured his hamstring and had to be put on the Injured List.

Robert homered for the Orioles in Thursday’s loss to the Boston Red Sox, but he was sidelined shortly thereafter. He played in Friday night’s game but was hitless in three at bats.  He has played in just 3 games for the Orioles and has just 2 hits in 11 at bats and 12 plate appearances. He did drive in 3 runs.

Manager Craig Albernaz described the injury as “low-grade” and the hope is Robert will come off the IL and will be able to play again this season. Robert will be eligible to return to action Sept. 15.

Robert had been with the New York Mets earlier this season but he played just 58 games for them. He was slashing .223/.303/.399 with the Mets with 10 home runs and 23 runs batted in when he was placed on waivers. Roberts is considered an excellent athlete, but his frequent injuries derailed his career with the Chicago White Sox. He played on the South Side of Chicago from 2020 through 2025.

He had his best season 2023 when he stayed relatively healthy and played in 145 games. He hit 38 home runs that season, drove in 80 runs and stole 20 bases.

That was the only season that he did not spend time on the Injured List.

Robert signed a 6-year, $50 million contract that concludes this season. The contract carries a club option for $20 million in 2027, but that will almost certainly be declined.
