Friday’s 7-6 win over the Colorado Rockies turned into a mess after umpire Doug Eddings called out St. Louis Cardinals’ rookie pitcher Hancel Rincon for wearing his hat a little bit sideways. After a yelling match ensued, manager Oliver Marmol was ejected from the contest.

Eddings arrived at Saturday’s game apologizing to Rincon, Marmol, and nearly everyone who would listen to him for his actions the previous night. Reports indicate that the apology came because MLB informed the longtime umpire that he was acting inappropriately and had gone too far with his actions, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

“The apology umpire Doug Eddings issued to St. Louis Cardinals rookie reliever Hancel Rincon on Saturday came after Major League Baseball communicated to the veteran ump that he acted inappropriately the previous night when he told the rookie reliever to straighten his cap,” Rosenthal wrote.

“Umpires operate with broad discretion if they believe a player’s actions are distracting, but according to two people briefed on the matter who were granted anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly,” Rosenthal continued, “the league viewed Eddings’ admonishment of Rincon as going too far.”

It appears everyone is opposing Doug Eddings, as the Cardinals and Rockies wore their hats a little crooked during Saturday’s matchup that ended in a 10-7 loss for St. Louis. The apology issued by Eddings may have been his own idea, as there are no claims suggesting MLB told him to apologize for his actions.

With this bizarre incident in the rearview mirror, the Cardinals and Rockies will face off again on Sunday. It will be the final contest of a three game series, with the winner taking the series win.
