Cardinals, Rockies show solidarity with Hancel Rincon after ump’s embarrassing ‘power-hungry’ show

The incident between St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Hancel Rincon and Doug Eddings took the sports world by storm. It was a situation that seemed completely unnecessary, as Eddings had an issue with Rincon’s hat being slightly tilted. Things took another step when the longtime umpire pointed the finger at Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman for allegedly having a problem with Rincon’s hat.

After Goodman denied ever mentioning having a problem with the Cardinals’ 24-year-old rookie’s hat, Eddings eventually issued an apology to Rincon. Still, it was something that didn’t sit right with St. Louis or Colorado, as players from both teams tilted their hats during Saturday’s contest in a show of solidarity against Eddings, according to ESPN.

“Players from St. Louis and Colorado tilted their caps Saturday night in apparent protest of umpire Doug Eddings, one day after he instructed Cardinals rookie pitcher Hancel Rincon to straighten his hat.”

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol, who was ejected by Doug Eddings over the whole hat incident, called out the umpire for his actions. Marmol pointed out how tilted hats are nothing new in MLB, and went as far as to claim that Eddings was essentially on a power trip.

“I had an issue with Doug,” Marmol told reporters after the game. “Just Doug. He took it upon himself to tell our rookie pitcher the kid’s ‘not going to wear his hat on my field that way.’ You got Dontrelle Willis, CC Sabathia, Pedro Strop — plenty of guys that have worn it way more tilted. I have an issue with that. That’s just a power-hungry move, in my opinion.”

Rincon is a Dominican Republic native who is finally working his way into the majors since beginning his pro baseball career in 2019. He was called up to the Cardinals after posting a 4.92 ERA, 1.248 WHIP, and 88 strikeouts through 71.1 innings pitched at Triple-A Memphis.
