Guardians walk-off vs. Tigers has White Sox sweating on top of AL Central

The Cleveland Guardians are making a run at the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. The Guardians opened the weekend with a doubleheader sweep of the Detroit Tigers before dropping the game on Saturday.

The Guardians then got back into the win column on Sunday, with a tenth-inning walk-off win.

It also pulled them closer to the White Sox in the division, something Scott Merkin of MLB.com pointed out.

“Cleveland picks up its third walkoff victory in four weekend games against the Tigers. They are 2 back of the White Sox with the White Sox/Twins on the horizon in 90 minutes,” Merkin posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The Tigers took an early lead in the game. A Riley Greene double in the top of the first inning drove in two runs, giving them the 2-0 lead. Travis Bazzana doubled home a run in the bottom of the first, and a Brayan Rocchio homer in the bottom of the fifth tied the game. The game would remain tied, leading to extra innings. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Daniel Schneemann’s single scored the game-winning run.

Rocchio hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth in the first game of the doubleheader on Friday. In the next game, a Bazzana single drove in Rocchio in the bottom of the tenth for the sweep of the doubleheader.

The Guardians are now 73-71 on the season, placing them in second place in the AL Central. They are just two games behind the White Sox in the division. They also have a one-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays for the final wild card spot in the American League. The Guardians start a series with the Baltimore Orioles on Monday afternoon.
