Watch Dodgers’ Kyle Tucker leap over the wall for bonkers robbery vs. Nationals

There is no doubting the fact that Kyle Tucker has underperformed in his first season for the Los Angeles Dodgers after he signed a four-year, $240 million contract this past offseason. But every now and again, Tucker is showing glimpses of the old self that convinced the Dodgers to sign him to such a huge contract to begin with.

Tucker did go 0-4 from the plate on Sunday in a 7-5 win for the Dodgers over the Washington Nationals, bringing down his season-long OPS to .678 — a career-worst. But in the top of the eighth inning, with LA still down by one run, 5-4, Tucker made an impressive play on the field that helped keep the deficit they faced to just one.

Nationals catcher Harry Ford squared up a 2-1 pitch from reliever Bobby Miller. Ford already had a two-run double to his name earlier in the game, and it looked like he hit a 94-mph sinker from Miller squarely to deep right field, which sent Tucker all the way to the warning track. But the Dodgers right fielder was tracking the ball all along, and he completed an incredible leaping catch to rob Ford of what would have been a home run.

Miller then proceeded to clean up the rest of the inning, inducing a groundout from Jacob Young and then striking out Nasim Nunez. This set up a big half-inning for the Dodgers, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of a monster three-run home run from Mookie Betts. They ended up winning by this exact margin, 7-5.

The Dodgers would prefer it if Tucker returned to his pre-LA level from the plate soon. Tucker had a career OPS of .865 prior to signing that huge contract with the reigning World Series champion, and that is still the standard the team should hold him to.

Nonetheless, as long as he finds ways to contribute to winning, the Dodgers will have no problem giving him the time he needs to figure out whatever he needs to at the plate.
