Joe Ryan’s injury return is too little, too late for fading Twins

As the playoff hopes of the Minnesota Twins are fading by the day with 19 games left in the season and the team 68-75, which puts them third in the AL Central, the team is about to get back a key pitcher. While the Twins’ postseason push could end negatively, the latest update on Joe Ryan could be a silver lining in what could be a disappointing playoff fate.

Minnesota took to its social media channels to announce that Ryan will be reinstated not only from his recent rehab assignment, but also from the 15-day injured list.

“Reinstated from rehab assignment and reinstated from 15-day injured list,” the Twins said about Ryan’s status update.

Ryan hasn’t been on the mound since Aug. 4 in his start against the Kansas City Royals, as he’s missed time due to a left glute strain. The 30-year-old would throw a bullpen session on Saturday, with manager Derek Shelton saying afterwards that Ryan’s next start won’t be in the minor leagues, but rather at the MLB level.

“I think we’ll wait and see where he’s at,” said manager Derek Shelton, “but I think there’s a good chance that his next start would be in the big leagues.”

Twins’ Joe Ryan felt good after last rehab start

Recording a rehab start last Tuesday, Ryan expressed how “it felt good to get out there,” as he’s ready to come back to the mound amidst a good season, recording a 3.65 ERA to go along with 138 strikeouts and a 6-8 record.

“It felt better than … I was throwing as hard as I was in the rehab game in the bullpen early. That’s probably a good thing. … I just felt better on a couple of things I was trying to work on this week, and I was able to touch those. I was happy with that,” Ryan said, via MLB.com.

At any rate, Ryan is set to start Monday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, as the team is currently four-and-a-half games out of an AL Wild Card spot.
