Stars GM drops Jason Robertson truth bomb after 1-year contract extension

The Dallas Stars were able to get a deal done with Jason Robertson as both sides agreed on a one-year, $12 million deal. Though they were able to come to terms, there are still questions surrounding the future of Robertson, with him becoming a free agent next season. General manager Jim Nill recently spoke about Robertson’s deal and their plans moving forward.

“It’s always going to be hard,” Nill said on NHL Network. “You’re dealing with star players and they deserve to get paid. And we’re trying to find the right number that makes it fit so we can keep our team together.

“It just takes time. It’s patience, it’s time. And until you hit deadlines, nothing really happens. In the end, Jason, they filed for arbitration, which gives you a deadline, which is probably the best thing for both parties. And, so we were able to get that deal done.”

If Robertson isn’t signed before July 1, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent. That won’t be the best news for the Stars, because other teams will be able to offer him a deal, and they might give him more money.

“Now, moving forward, you know, our plan is to try to get (Robertson) signed here this season sometime, before he comes to UFA,” Nill said.

There’s no doubt that teams will line up for Robertson, especially when looking at what he’s accomplished over the past few years. In his six seasons with the Stars, he’s recorded 213 goals and 490 points in 456 regular-season games.

“Everyone can see that they are in a little (salary cap) crunch. At the end of the day, they had my rights, right? I wasn’t free to go anywhere this year so, the chances of staying in Dallas this offseason were high obviously because of that. It just happened in this way and obviously we’ll have time to revisit it later this year,” Robertson said after signing.
