Cowboys get brutal injury news on All-Pro Dak Prescott protector

The Dallas Cowboys are officially less than a week away from kicking off the 2026 NFL season. The Cowboys are widely expected to have one of the best offensive units in the NFL this year after putting together an elite performance on that side of the ball last season.

Unfortunately, the Cowboys got a tough injury update on one of the key members of their offensive line on Monday.

“Cowboys LG Tyler Smith will have thumb surgery. Will go on IR and miss the first four games,” reported Clarence Hill Jr. of All City DLLS on X, formerly Twitter.

Smith is one of the best players on the Cowboys’ offensive line and the team overall, and missing him for the first chunk of the season is certainly not ideal.

Dallas has long been known to have one of the best offensive line units in the NFL landscape, and that group will be tasked with giving quarterback Dak Prescott enough time in the pocket to find his talented array of wide receivers, led by CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens.

Last year, Prescott put together what would have been an MVP-level season had the Dallas defense performed better, and the Cowboys’ front office made strides to improve that side of the ball over the offseason with several big moves and draft selections.

In any case, the Cowboys will take the field for the first time in the 2026 season on Sunday evening on the road against the divisional rival New York Giants in prime time.
