Insider takes shot at Hugh Freeze after Auburn football’s Alex Golesh falls on sword for Byrum Brown
As the Auburn football team won their Week 1 matchup against Baylor, 17-16, it was a close game that featured a frustrating performance from quarterback Byrum Brown. With the Auburn football program led by head coach Alex Golesh and Brown, this insider would have his own silver lining at the expense of former coach Hugh Freeze.
In Joseph Goodman’s recent column for AL.com, he spoke about how impressed he was with Golesh taking most of the blame for Brown’s interceptions, as the coach said: “I take more blame for the picks.”
“We tried to force some things to try to push it down the field where I just felt like we kept driving and stalling right in that middle of the field…and I felt like we just had to go end it,” Golesh said, via On3 Sports. “That’s on us as much as anybody, really on me trying to force it a little bit.”
For Goodman, he liked to see that, posing the question of whether Freeze would do what Golesh did, saying that he had a “tendency to take credit” for successes and “blame everyone” in losing close games.
“As any good coach would do, Golesh attempted to take some of the blame for Brown’s three-interception day. That impressed me. Would former coach Hugh Freeze have done the same? Let’s just say that Freeze had a tendency to take credit for Auburn’s rare successes and blame everyone else when Auburn lost close games,” Goodman wrote.
Does Byrum Brown give Auburn football the best chance to win?
Looking at Brown’s performance in Auburn football’s opening game of the season, he’d throw for 259 yards on completing 26 out of 35 pass attempts with zero touchdowns to go with the three picks. Goodman would still say that Brown “gives Auburn the best chance to win.”
“Does Brown have the ability to lead Auburn to the playoffs? I have no idea. Neither does anyone else,” Goodman wrote. “Brown is Auburn’s best option despite the three interceptions against Baylor.”
Brown has the chance to prove the doubters wrong when the Tigers take on Southern Miss next Saturday.
