Edu officially leaves Nottingham Forest as club’s head of global football after being banished from premises by Evangelos Marinakis

Edu has left Nottingham Forest just over a year after joining as the club’s global head of football.

talkSPORT reported in March that the two parties were negotiating the former Arsenal midfielder’s departure.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis had told Edu to stay away from club premises amid disappointment over his performance.

Edu, who was also tasked with overseeing Greek club Olympiacos and Portuguese outfit Rio Ave – both also owned by Marinakis – as part of the role, was involved in a turbulent season at Forest.

Forest’s wild ride

The Reds went through four managers over the course of the campaign, with the last of them, Vitor Pereira, being replaced by Oliver Glasner this summer.

Nuno Espirito Santo guided began the season in charge before a dramatic falling out with Edu over summer transfers led to his sudden exit just three games in.

He was succeeded by Ange Postecoglou, but the former Tottenham boss lasted just eight winless matches before being dismissed.

Sean Dyche took over and won 10 of his 25 games in charge, but he too was given his marching orders in February, making way for Pereira.

Pereira ultimately steered Forest to Premier League safety, securing a fifth straight top-flight campaign.

But that wasn’t enough for him to keep his job and he made way for Glasner following his departure from Crystal Palace.

Glasner has overseen two draws in his first three Premier League games at the helm.

He’ll be looking for his first win as Forest head coach away to Aston Villa on Saturday.

Edu exits

One of Arsene Wenger‘s 2003/04 Arsenal ‘Invincibles’, Edu also earned 16 caps for Brazil.

Finishing his playing career with Corinthians, he took over as the Brazilian giants’ director of football in 2011.

After working as an assistant to Carlos Queiroz with the Iran national team and becoming Brazil’s general coordinator, he returned to Arsenal in 2019.

Edu was appointed as the Gunners’ first-ever technical director.

Three years later, in another club first, he was named sporting director.

The 48-year-old took the job at Forest in July last year, but it’s fair to say things have not worked out.
