Why Tigers general manager removed his name from Red Wings’ search

On July 15, the Detroit Red Wings decided to move on from Steve Yzerman as the general manager. The Red Wings brought in an outside search firm to help find their new GM. The team is looking for more of an analytics-driven person to lead the franchise.

Now, one possible candidate for the job, Detroit Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg, has pulled his name from the search, according to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman.

“Detroit Tigers GM Jeff Greenberg — citing his commitment and desire to finish what he’s started— has withdrawn from consideration for the vacant Red Wings position. The search continues minus one legit contender,” Friedman posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Jeff Greenberg has been the Tigers’ general manager since September 2023. In his two years as the GM of the Tigers, the team has made the playoffs each season.  Still, the Tigers have not made it out of the AL Division Series in that span, and Greenberg wants to return them to World Series contention.

While the move from MLB general manager to NHL general manager seems odd, it would not have been for Greenberg. He worked for the Chicago Cubs from 2012 through 2022, moving from an intern in the baseball operations department up to assistant general manager. He then moved to the Chicago Blackhawks as their associate general manager for 18 months before returning to baseball.

Greenberg would not have been the first cross-sport executive either. Paul DePodesta was the general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and a front office executive for the San Diego Padres and New York Mets before heading to the NFL, joining the Cleveland Browns.

With Greenberg now out of contention for the job, the Wings need to find a new GM. Both the future of that role and the future of Dylan Larkin are some of the top questions for the team heading into the season. The Red Wings open the pre-season on September 21 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
