ESPN reveals how Patriots’ Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal is making life more difficult for NFL’s women reporters

The New England Patriots are just a couple of days away from kicking off their 2026 season on the road vs the Seattle Seahawks. Head coach Mike Vrabel is hoping to keep the attention on the field this year after a tumultuous summer that saw an apparent longstanding affair with former NFL reporter Dianna Russini come to light with a series of bombshell photos of the pair together in intimate settings.

Russini has since stepped down from her role as a prominent NFL insider with The Athletic, and now, more information is coming to light on how the scandal has made life more difficult for other women in the NFL journalism field.

“…several women reporters, from ESPN and other outlets, said that the Vrabel-Russini situation has impacted their jobs, which were already challenging because of their gender. One reporter said an assistant coach told her he would not want to be seen meeting her for a coffee, specifically citing the optics of the Vrabel-Russini situation,” reported Ben Strauss and Kalyn Kahler of ESPN.

“It really sucks this came from someone who a lot of us thought approached things differently than his peers,” said one NFL reporter. “It’s just unfortunate because it felt like he understood there are challenges that women in the business face and was doing one small bit to try and push back on it.”

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Rusinni and whether or not she will be able to recover her career as a prominent NFL journalist, but the scandal certainly did nothing to help the field overall.

Meanwhile, Vrabel was able to keep his job, and he will hope that some winning will be enough to distract fans for the time being.
