Iowa backup RB dealt tough injury update ahead of Iowa State clash

Iowa’s dominant season-opening victory over Northern Illinois came with some bad news ahead of its rivalry matchup against Iowa State.

Running back L.J. Phillips Jr. suffered what is believed to be a high ankle sprain during the Hawkeyes’ 40-0 victory Saturday, according to Matt Zenitz. The injury puts his availability for Saturday’s matchup against Iowa State in serious doubt.

Phillips carried the ball four times for five yards before leaving the game. Phillips arrived at Iowa this offseason as one of the Hawkeyes’ biggest transfer additions. He was dominant at South Dakota in 2025, rushing for 1,920 yards and 19 touchdowns while averaging 6.5 yards per carry.

He isn’t Iowa’s starting running back, with Kamari Moulton firmly holding that role after exploding for 183 yards and two touchdowns against Northern Illinois. However, Phillips gives the Hawkeyes another powerful option who could eventually become an important piece of their offense.

Unfortunately, Iowa may have to wait before getting a real look at him. High ankle sprains can be difficult injuries for running backs, and Phillips’ reported diagnosis makes his chances of playing against Iowa State appear slim. Depending on the severity, his absence could potentially extend beyond one game.

The Hawkeyes certainly don’t need to rush him back with the depth at the position. Moulton showed Saturday that he’s more than capable of carrying the rushing attack, and Iowa’s primary goal should be getting Phillips completely healthy before Big Ten play ramps up. Nathan McNeil, Braeden Jackson, and Xavier Williams can all carry the rock at least 3+ times a game.

Saturday’s rivalry game would have been an excellent opportunity for Phillips to introduce himself to Iowa fans. Instead, his first significant opportunity with the Hawkeyes may have to wait.
