How Seahawks can take advantage of Patriots-Christian Gonzalez contract situation in season opener
The Seattle Seahawks are just a few days away from kicking off their title defense with a Super Bowl rematch against the New England Patriots. The Seahawks are looking to become the rare NFL team to repeat this year, and will get an immediate look at a New England team hungry for revenge.
One storyline for the Patriots this offseason has been the contract situation of star cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who has been holding out of training camp in hopes of an extension.
Recently, ESPN NFL insider Dan Orlovsky stopped by The Pat McAfee Show and spoke on Gonzalez’s potential status for the game vs Seattle.
“Let’s say he does not get a contract by Wednesday. I think the number one thing I’m doing if I’m Seattle offensively is, how much are you willing to tackle on the perimeter knowing you haven’t gotten your money yet?… I grew up with a coach who subscribed to the philosophy that if you were playing against a premier cover corner, the first thing you do to start those games is see how much that cover corner wants to tackle,” he said, per Pat McAfee on X, formerly Twitter.
It’s certainly an interesting thought as the Seahawks gear up for the rematch.
At this point, it hasn’t been officially confirmed that Gonzalez will indeed play in this game as he searches for a new deal.
Gonzalez is arguably the best overall player on the Patriots’ roster and a big reason why the team’s defense experienced such immense success last year, particularly during the playoffs.
It will be interesting to see whether the Seahawks follow Orlovsky’s advice on Wednesday evening.
